This guide is for you if you are
Opening CorelDRAW for the first time
Your school, course or print shop recommends it, and you don't know which tool to start with.
Making layouts for print
Business cards, flyers, stickers, signs: you want the print shop to accept the file the first time.
Learning graphic design
CorelDRAW is your first vector editor, and you want to understand principles you'll use in any program.
In short
- Start with the 15-day CorelDRAW Graphics Suite trial: no credit card needed, but the days go fast, so plan your exercises first.
- The core of CorelDRAW is simple shapes, Convert to Curve (Ctrl+Q) and editing nodes with the Shape tool.
- Left-click a palette color for the fill, right-click for the outline. Work in CMYK for offset printing.
- Your first project is a two-sided business card or a flyer: it shows composition, typography and print prep at once.
- Save a print PDF via File > Print with the Corel Print to PDF printer, and check bleed requirements with the print shop in advance.
Five steps to your first layout in CorelDRAW
- 1
Step 1
Choose a version and start the trial
Several products carry the CorelDRAW name. The main one is CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (current version: 2026): it runs on Windows and Mac, and subscribers also get the browser-based CorelDRAW Web. Besides CorelDRAW itself, the suite includes Corel PHOTO-PAINT for photos. You can buy it as a subscription (monthly or annual) or as a one-time purchase; Corel says plainly that the one-time version excludes many features and apps available to subscribers. There's a 15-day free trial with no credit card; it doesn't run on a phone, so you need a computer.
- CorelDRAW Standard and CorelDRAW Essentials (2024 versions) are simpler and cheaper, but Windows-only;
- CorelDRAW Go is a separate browser app with templates for simple jobs, also with a 15-day trial;
- for Windows, Corel lists Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit); for Mac, macOS Sonoma (14) or newer; at least 8 GB of RAM, 16 GB recommended.
💡 Write down the exercises from this guide first, then start the trial. We don't quote prices: they depend on country and promotions, so check the purchase page.

Step 2
Create a document and learn the interface
On launch you see the Welcome screen: recent files, templates and a New document button where you set page size and orientation. For print, work in millimetres and in the final format from the start. Then learn the four parts of the workspace:
- the Toolbox on the left holds every tool; a small arrow next to an icon opens a flyout with related tools;
- the Property bar at the top shows settings that change with the selected tool or object;
- Dockers are panels for layers, alignment and object properties; you can move and hide them;
- the Document navigator at the bottom switches and adds pages; next to it the Document palette shows the colors already in the file.
💡 Change ruler units in Tools > Options. Shortcuts in this guide are for Windows.

Step 3
Shapes, curves and nodes
Vector graphics are made of paths, not pixels, so they scale without losing quality. In CorelDRAW everything starts with simple shapes. Rectangle tool: drag diagonally, hold Ctrl for a square, and double-click the tool to draw a page-sized rectangle, handy for a background. You can round or chamfer corners right in the Property bar. The Ellipse tool works the same way (Ctrl gives a circle). To edit a shape freely, select it and press Convert to Curve (Ctrl+Q), then work with the Shape tool:
- double-click a path to add a node, double-click a node to delete it;
- each node is cusp, smooth or symmetrical; right-click to change the type;
- Weld merges shapes into one, Trim cuts one shape with another; both are in the Property bar when several objects are selected;
- Ctrl+D duplicates the selected object.
💡 Exercise: build a simple mark for a business card from circles, rectangles, Weld and Trim only, with no freehand drawing. The constraint teaches you to think in shapes, not brushstrokes.

Step 4
Color, text and layout
Color comes from the palette: select an object, left-click a swatch for the fill, right-click for the outline; the "no color" swatch removes them. Pick the color model for the output: Corel explains that CMYK is for offset printing, RGB for web graphics and some digital printing, and spot colors such as Pantone for an exact color that CMYK can't reproduce. CorelDRAW has artistic text (short lines, headings) and paragraph text (blocks of text in a frame, including columns). For layout, turn on alignment guides with Alt+Shift+A: they show the edges and centers of nearby objects and equal spacing between them.
- one font for headings and one for text; make sure the font supports Cyrillic if you set Ukrainian text;
- equal margins from the page edge on every side, and no text right up against the trim line;
- in multi-page documents, put repeating elements (background, logo, footer) on a master layer, which applies to every page.
💡 Exercise: a two-sided business card, two pages in one file. Front: name, role and the mark from step 3. Back: contacts. Check the size with the print shop you'll use.

Step 5
Prepare a print PDF and show your layout
The safest route to a print shop is a PDF. Open File > Print and choose the Corel Print to PDF printer. The Prepress tab sets the bleed and printer's marks. Extend any background that touches the edge past the page by the bleed amount, or a white strip may remain after trimming. Always check bleed size, color profile and file format with the print shop: requirements differ.
- if you have a raster sketch or an old logo, PowerTRACE (right-click the image > Outline Trace) turns it into editable vector shapes, though you'll still need to clean up the result by hand;
- CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 has generative AI (Text-to-vector, image generation) that uses AI credits; while learning, build shapes yourself so you understand what they're made of.
💡 Before sending the file to print, show the layout in the community and ask about something specific: what people notice first, whether small text is readable, whether it's too tight near the edge.
You're not alone with these questions
We counted what people ask about most in our community. Learning and courses come first: "where do I start in a new program?" gets asked all the time, and it gets answered.

Questions and answers

Is CorelDRAW free?
No. Corel says CorelDRAW Graphics Suite isn't a free product, but it has a 15-day trial with no credit card. After that it's a subscription or a one-time purchase; schools, students and teachers have separate licensing. Check the CorelDRAW site for current prices.
Does CorelDRAW work on Mac?
Yes, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 runs on macOS Sonoma (14) and newer, on Apple Silicon or a multicore Intel processor with AVX2 support. CorelDRAW Standard and CorelDRAW Essentials, according to the site, are Windows-only. The browser-based CorelDRAW Web is for Graphics Suite subscribers. Check your Mac against the tech specs before you start the trial.
Should I learn CorelDRAW or Illustrator?
Both are vector editors with the same basics: shapes, curves, nodes, fill and outline. Corel itself lists branding, signage and large-format printing, apparel and technical schematics among CorelDRAW's main use cases. If your school, job or print shop already requires one, learn that one. Compare the approach in [Illustrator for beginners](/en/guides/illustrator-for-beginners).
Does CorelDRAW use my work to train AI?
The FAQ on the CorelDRAW site says no: users' work isn't used to train its own AI features or third-party AI models. Generative features run on AI credits: subscribers get a monthly allowance, and one-time buyers get a fixed amount. Your files stay yours, and you don't have to use the AI features at all.
Is the Spaceberry community paid?
No, Spaceberry Community is free. It's run by Spaceberry Foundation, a non-profit organization. All you need to join is a Telegram account. In the chat you can ask questions, share your work for feedback and take part in design games: the same brief for everyone, a deadline and a community vote. Conversations are in Ukrainian.
