This guide is for you if you are
Opening Canva for the first time
You need a post, an invitation or a poster, and you want it to look neat on the first try.
Already using templates
You build designs from ready-made templates but feel they look like thousands of others.
Taking design seriously
Canva is your first tool, and you want to understand the basics you'll also need in Figma.
In short
- Canva's free plan is enough for your first design: you'll need paid features later, if at all.
- Pick the format and size first, then the template: reworking a finished layout for another size takes longer.
- A template is a hint. Change its text, colors and images, and remove everything you don't need.
- One or two fonts, a limited palette and alignment to shared lines make a design look tidy.
- Download PNG for social media and PDF Print for printing, and check the print shop's requirements first.
Five steps to your first design
- 1
Step 1
Sign up and choose a format
Create an account at canva.com: the free plan is enough for learning and includes 5 GB of storage for your files. Before choosing a template, decide where the design will live: an Instagram post, a story, a presentation, an A4 poster. Find the design type through search or set a custom size in pixels, millimeters, centimeters or inches.
- for screens (social media, websites), work in pixels;
- for print, work in millimeters and in the final format from the start, such as A4 or A3;
- if you need several formats, start with the main one and make the rest as separate files.
💡 The size you choose at the start shapes everything: font sizes, spacing, how much text fits. Turning a square post into a vertical story is almost a new design.
- 2
Step 2
Treat a template as a hint, not an answer
Canva templates help you start quickly, but thousands of people use them. Pick two or three you like and take them apart first: what's the main element, how many fonts, which colors, where the empty space is. Then take one and make it yours:
- replace all the text with your own and shorten it: a layout should hold only what someone reads in a few seconds;
- remove decorative elements that add nothing to the message;
- swap the colors for your own, such as your brand's or the event's;
- replace stock photos with your own or more fitting ones.
Show your first design
A fresh pair of eyes quickly spots what you missed. Post your first social post or poster in the community and ask what people notice first and whether the text reads.

Step 3
Text and fonts
Most Canva designs are mainly text. Add it from the text tab in the side panel and build a hierarchy right away: heading, subheading, body text. Separate the levels by size and weight, not by five different fonts. For Ukrainian text, choose fonts with Cyrillic: if letters turn into boxes, the font doesn't support your language, so pick another one.
- one font for headings and one for text is all you need at the start;
- the heading should be clearly bigger than the text, not a couple of points bigger;
- don't stretch text boxes to "fill the space": empty space is part of the design too.
💡 Squint at the layout: you should still see what matters most. If everything stands out equally, nothing does.

Step 4
Color, images and alignment
Limit the palette: one main color, one accent and neutral shades for text and background. Check contrast: for normal text, the WCAG accessibility standard requires a ratio of at least 4.5:1 between text and background. Take images from Canva's elements library or upload your own in the uploads section, and only use photos you have the right to use.
- align elements to a few shared lines instead of by eye;
- keep the same margins from the edges on every side;
- text over a photo reads better on a calm area or on a semi-transparent panel.
- 5
Step 5
Download the file and show your design
Download the finished design via Share → Download and pick the format for the job. PNG works for social media. For print there's PDF Print: 300 dpi, with bleed and crop marks. Check the bleed size and color profile with your print shop; the CMYK profile and transparent-background downloads aren't available on Canva Free.
💡 Before publishing, show the design in the community and ask about something specific: what people notice first, whether the text is readable, whether there are too many elements. A specific question gets a useful answer.
You're not alone with these questions
We counted what people ask about most in our community. Learning, portfolios and Figma are the top three, so you won't be the first to ask "where do I start?"

Practice with a deadline and live feedback
The best teacher is a task with a deadline that other people see. That's why the community regularly runs design games: the same brief for everyone, a deadline and a vote.

Questions and answers

Is Canva free?
Canva has a free plan, which is enough for learning and simple designs, and paid plans. Some features aren't on the free plan: for example, transparent-background downloads and the CMYK profile for print. See Canva's pricing page for the current list.
Can I make a logo in Canva and register it as a trademark?
Under Canva's rules, a logo made from a template or stock elements can't be registered as a trademark, because those elements are available to everyone. For such a logo, Canva allows only fonts, simple lines and shapes, or uploading your own logo. More in the guide [How to design a logo yourself](/en/guides/logo-design).
Canva or Figma?
Canva is handy for quick jobs: posts, presentations and posters from templates. Figma is a tool for interface design, with auto layout, components and prototypes. If you're heading for UI/UX, start with Canva to build confidence but don't stay too long: see [Figma for beginners](/en/guides/figma-for-beginners).
Where can I learn Canva?
Start with Design School, Canva's own section of courses and lessons. Some courses are marked Pro, meaning they're for paid plans. Combine lessons with practice: make one real design a week, such as a post, an invitation or a poster, and show it to others. A specific question about your work ("what do you notice first?") teaches more than one more tutorial.
Is the Spaceberry community paid?
No, Spaceberry Community is completely free. It's supported by Spaceberry Foundation, a non-profit public organization. All you need to join is a Telegram account: tap the button on this page, introduce yourself and ask your first question. The community has 1,504 designers who share their work, give feedback and take part in design games with the same brief for everyone. Conversations are in Ukrainian.
