This guide is for you if you
Want to make a photo collage
For a gift, a social media post or a wall at home, and you want it to look tidy rather than random.
Are learning graphic design
A collage is a quick exercise in composition, color and working with layers that you can finish in an evening.
Are looking for your own visual style
Digital or paper collage lets you experiment with imagery even if you can't draw.
In short
- First choose a type: a photo collage in a grid, an artistic digital collage, or a paper collage that you scan afterwards.
- Set yourself limits: a theme, a palette and a number of elements. They hold a collage together.
- Use your own images or ones whose license allows your use, and read its terms.
- Composition rests on one main element, contrast of scale and well-chosen overlaps.
- Cut out and combine elements with masks: they don't erase anything, so everything can be fixed.
Five steps to a collage
- 1
Step 1
Choose a type of collage and an idea
"Collage" covers very different things, and the type decides your tools and approach. Decide what you're making:
- a photo collage in a grid: several photos in frames with even gaps, for a gift, an event recap or a post;
- an artistic digital collage: cut-out shapes, textures, type and color combined into a new image;
- a paper collage: scissors, glue, colored paper, old postcards; the finished piece is photographed or scanned;
- mixed media: paper textures or your own drawings that you scan and combine on the computer.
💡 Put the idea into one sentence, such as "summer in the city, hot and noisy" or "our year in ten photos". Then add limits: a format, a few colors and only as many elements as you really need. Limits are the best protection against chaos.

Step 2
Collect materials you have the right to use
A collage is made of other people's images or your own, so rights come up straight away. The simplest route is to work with your own material and take the rest under a clear license:
- your own photos and scans: the texture of paper, fabric, leaves, your drawings or street photos; textures like these make a collage unique;
- Unsplash: the license allows free use of photos, including commercial use and without crediting the author, but it doesn't cover trademarks, recognizable people or artworks shown in the photos;
- Pexels: use is also free and credit is optional; however, you may not show identifiable people in a bad light or imply that people or brands in the photos endorse your product;
- Creative Commons licenses: the BY condition requires you to credit the author, link to the license and indicate if you made changes, and the NC condition rules out commercial use;
- magazines, newspapers and images from search results are someone's work too; everyone cuts them up for a practice piece that stays in a drawer, but for publishing, replace them with your own or licensed images.
💡 Keep a simple list of sources: file name, link, author and license. When you want to show the collage in a portfolio, you won't have to remember where each picture came from.
Someone else's eyes are the best composition test
A fresh pair of eyes will tell you straight away what matters in a collage and what's extra. Post your collage with its one-line idea and ask what people saw first.

Step 3
Build the composition
A collage where every element matters equally reads as a pile of pictures. You need an order: what the eye sees first and what second. Nielsen Norman Group recommends sticking to three size levels (small, medium and large), and the rule works well here too. What helps:
- pick one main element and make it the largest or the most contrasting;
- play with contrast of scale: a giant hand next to a tiny house is more interesting than things of the same size;
- overlap elements: something partly hidden behind another creates depth;
- keep a limited palette: if the photos are multicolored, bring them to a shared tone or turn some of them black and white;
- in a photo grid, keep even gaps between frames and around the edges, and make the best photo bigger than the others;
- leave empty space: it gives the main element room to breathe.
💡 Lay the elements out roughly in a few minutes, take a screenshot and try two completely different layouts. Compare the versions side by side; it's easier to see which is stronger.

Step 4
Cut out and combine elements with masks
The key skill in digital collage is masking. Masks hide part of an image without erasing anything, so any cut can be fixed. Here's how it works in popular apps:
- Photoshop, layer mask: you paint on the mask with a brush; white reveals, black conceals and gray makes things partly transparent. This is how you cut an object out of its background without the eraser;
- Photoshop, clipping mask: the non-transparent areas of the bottom layer reveal the content of the layers above it. This is how you put a texture or photo inside a shape or letters. Create one with Layer → Create Clipping Mask, or by Alt-clicking (Option on a Mac) between two layers in the Layers panel;
- Figma: any layer can be a mask, whether a shape, text or an image with transparency. Place the mask below the other layers, select everything and choose Use as mask, or press Ctrl+Alt+M (Ctrl+Cmd+M on a Mac). Masks are available on all plans;
- Canva: for photo collages there are frames under Elements → Frames. Drag a photo onto a frame until it snaps into place, and double-click to move or enlarge the photo inside. A regular shape can be turned into a frame with Change to frame.
💡 To stop cut-outs looking "stuck on", give them shared light: a soft shadow on the same side for all of them, the same direction of lighting, and a shared texture or grain over the whole collage.

Step 5
Finish it and save it properly
At the end there's often an urge to add something more. Usually the opposite helps: take something away. A final check:
- the squint test: squint; the main element should stand out, not a random detail;
- minus one: hide each element in turn; if the collage is better without it, delete it;
- edges: check that no light fringes or bits of old background are left after cutting out;
- working file: save a version with layers and masks separately from the export, so you can change things later;
- export: take the size and proportions from the requirements of the platform where you'll publish, and for print check with the print shop;
- sources: if a license requires credit, add it to the post.
💡 Post the collage in the community with your one-sentence idea and ask what people saw first and whether it matches the idea. That's how you check whether the composition works.

Which app should I use to make a collage?
For a photo collage in a grid, Canva's frames are the simplest option. For an artistic digital collage, use Figma, where masks are available on all plans, or Photoshop with layer masks and clipping masks. A paper collage is made with scissors and glue and then scanned.
How do I cut an object out of a photo for a collage?
Use a mask, not the eraser. In Photoshop, a black brush on a layer mask hides part of the image and a white brush brings it back. In Figma, a shape or outline can become a mask with Use as mask. That way you can always fix the cut.
Can I use photos from the internet in a collage?
Only if the license allows your use. Unsplash and Pexels allow free use with some limits, and Creative Commons licenses have their own conditions, such as crediting the author or not using the work commercially. Your own photos, scans and drawings are the safest choice.
What's the difference between a collage and a moodboard?
The purpose. A moodboard is a working collection of references for finding the mood and direction of a project; it isn't shown as finished work. A collage is a piece of work in its own right, where elements combine into a new image with its own idea, focal point and composition. A moodboard can be the first step toward a collage: it's a handy place to pick a palette and textures.
