This guide is for you if you are

  • Looking for a first job

    You have a portfolio, or nearly, and want to search systematically.

  • Wondering what you're worth

    You're preparing for an interview and don't know what salary to name.

  • Applying without results

    You've sent dozens of applications but get almost no interview invitations.

In short

  • According to DOU, in June 2026 the UI/UX Designer median was $1,800 and the Product Designer median $3,000 per month after tax.
  • Level matters most: in UI/UX/Design the junior median is $900, middle $1,800 and senior $2,850.
  • Vacancies are shrinking: DOU Jobs listed 360 Design vacancies in October 2025 and 216 in October 2026, while applications per vacancy rose from 33 to 73.
  • With competition like this, what decides is not the number of applications but portfolio quality and a targeted application for each role.
  • Search on several platforms, keep a table of applications and ask for feedback after every rejection.

A first-job search plan

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Assess the market and your price soberly

    DOU surveys IT specialists about salaries twice a year. According to the summer 2026 survey (US dollars per month after tax, self-reported):

    • the UI/UX Designer median is $1,800, Product Designer $3,000;
    • by level in UI/UX/Design: Junior $900, Middle $1,800, Senior $2,850, Lead $3,500;
    • the median is $2,900 in product companies and $2,000 in service companies.

    💡 A median is the middle of the sample, not a promise. Use it as a reference for your own range in interviews. The full data and trends since 2019 are in our overview Design job market in Ukraine 2026.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Get your portfolio and CV ready

    Competition for a first job is high: in October 2026 Djinni listed 89 new UI/UX jobs with an average of 89 applications each. So before you send applications, get two things in shape:

    • a portfolio of two or three case studies that show your decisions, not just pretty screens;
    • a one-page CV: specialisation, portfolio link, tools, study and volunteer projects with one sentence on your contribution;
    • a LinkedIn profile that matches the CV: the same title, the same projects.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Search on several platforms

    Don't stick to one site. The main platforms for designers in Ukraine are DOU Jobs and Djinni; on Djinni you can fill in a candidate profile and companies will message you. Add LinkedIn and the career pages of companies whose products you use. Don't search only for “Junior UI/UX Designer”: also look at Trainee, Intern, Junior Product Designer and adjacent roles where design is part of the job.

    💡 Set up alerts for new vacancies by keyword. An application on the first day after posting stands out more than one among a hundred a week later.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Apply with focus and keep track

    Ten applications tailored to specific roles do more than a hundred identical ones. For each:

    • write three or four sentences of cover letter: why this company and which of your case studies is closest to their product;
    • put the matching case study first in your portfolio: mobile for a mobile team, a web service for B2B;
    • log the date, company, link, status and reply in a table so you can see what works and what doesn't.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Prepare for interviews and test tasks

    In interviews you'll be asked to walk through a case study: practise explaining the problem, your solution and why you chose it in 5 minutes. Before a test task, clarify the deadline and the evaluation criteria; if the task is very large, it's fair to ask how it will be used. After every rejection, ask for brief feedback: it's the cheapest way to improve the next attempt. While you search, keep practising: a design game entry with a deadline is a fresh case study and something to talk about in interviews.

    💡 A rejection is often a mismatch with one specific role, not a verdict on your talent. Don't count rejections; count what you changed after each one.

Practice with a deadline and live feedback

The best teacher is a task with a deadline that other people see. That's why the community regularly runs design games: the same brief for everyone, a deadline and a vote.

How much does a UI/UX designer earn in Ukraine?

According to the DOU survey, in June 2026 the UI/UX Designer median was $1,800 per month after tax, and the Product Designer median $3,000. The junior median in UI/UX/Design was $900. These are self-reported figures, so treat them as a reference.

How many design vacancies are there now?

Fewer than a year ago. According to DOU Jobs trends, the Design category had 360 vacancies in October 2025 and 216 in October 2026. On Djinni, 89 new UI/UX jobs were posted in October 2026.

Can a junior without experience find a job?

Yes, but it takes more effort than a few years ago: in October 2026 there were 73 applications per Design vacancy on DOU Jobs. Nielsen Norman Group's State of UX 2026 also notes that entry-level roles are recovering more slowly than senior ones. The ones who succeed have a strong portfolio, apply with focus and consider internships and adjacent roles.

What salary should I name in an interview?

Name a range based on the median for your level and type of company: according to DOU, the median is higher in product companies than in service companies. Be ready to explain what you can already do; that's a stronger argument than any number.

Is the Spaceberry community paid?

No. Spaceberry Community is free; it's supported by Spaceberry Foundation, a non-profit public organization.
