This guide is for you if you are

  • Learning design

    You use ChatGPT to study but don't see how to apply it to your own projects.

  • Building learning case studies

    You need believable copy, user scenarios and interview questions, and inventing everything yourself takes ages.

  • Getting generic answers

    You ask for "a nice design" and get an answer that would fit any project.

In short

  • ChatGPT is a text assistant: it helps designers most where there are words — briefs, interface copy, research, explaining decisions.
  • The Free plan is enough for learning, but file uploads, image creation and other tools are limited on it.
  • The more context in your request (product, audience, constraints, answer format), the fewer generic answers you get.
  • ChatGPT makes mistakes in a confident tone: check facts, numbers and accessibility advice against primary sources.
  • Don't upload NDA work or personal data; you can switch off model training on your chats in settings.

5 design tasks where ChatGPT really helps

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Break down the brief and find what's missing

    The most useful thing ChatGPT does for a designer is help you understand the task before you open Figma. Paste the brief (a learning one or an invented one) and ask not for a design but for an analysis. For a learning project, any idea works: a barber booking app, a city library website, a landing page for pottery classes.

    • "Here's the brief. List who the user is, what problem they solve and what counts as success. Mark what is stated and what you're assuming";
    • "What information is missing before I can start designing? Write 10 questions for the client, most important first";
    • "What constraints might this product have: technical, legal, content?"

    💡 Ask ChatGPT to separate facts from the brief and its own assumptions. Otherwise an invented "audience aged 25–35" easily ends up in your case study as something the client said.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Write copy for the layout, not lorem ipsum

    A layout with real copy reveals problems placeholder text hides: long names that don't fit a button, meaningless "OK" buttons, empty states with no explanation. ChatGPT quickly gives you microcopy drafts: headings, buttons, error messages, field hints. The key is context:

    • what the product is and who uses it;
    • which screen and what happens on it, for example "payment error after entering a card";
    • constraints: "button up to 20 characters", "friendly tone, no jokes", "plain English, address the user as 'you'";
    • format: "give 5 options in a table: text, length, when it fits".

    💡 Check generated copy carefully, especially in languages other than English: models sometimes produce word-for-word calques. Read it aloud; if a real person wouldn't say it, rewrite it.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Prepare research: hypothesis personas and interview questions

    ChatGPT won't replace talking to real users, but it helps you prepare. Ask for an interview script with open questions, a usability test plan or a list of user stories for a learning project. Generated "personas" are only hypotheses: the model doesn't know your users, it generalizes typical descriptions.

    • "Write 12 open questions for interviews with people who book barbers online. No leading questions";
    • "Check my questions: which are leading or closed, and how can I rephrase them?";
    • "Here are notes from three interviews. Group recurring problems and quote where each comes from";
    • "Write 5 usability test scenarios for the app, each with a goal and a success criterion".

    💡 In a portfolio case study, be honest about where you had real interviews and where you had AI-generated hypotheses. Recruiters and leads quickly spot a "persona" nobody ever met.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Get a critique of your layout and explain your decisions

    You can upload a screenshot of your layout to ChatGPT: PNG, JPEG and non-animated GIF are supported, up to 20 MB per image. Ask not for a "nice or not" verdict but for a review against criteria: hierarchy, readability, consistent spacing, clear actions. It's also useful for practicing how to defend decisions: designers constantly have to explain why the button is right there.

    • "Here's a checkout screen. What will the user see first? Which elements compete for attention?";
    • "Play a skeptical client and ask 5 awkward questions about this layout";
    • "Here's my explanation of why I chose this order of steps. What's unconvincing about it?"

    💡 Check color contrast and sizes with tools, not on the model's word: it judges the image roughly. For contrast there's the WCAG standard: at least 4.5:1 for normal text.

    Step 5

    Generate image drafts and know the limits

    ChatGPT can create images and edit uploaded ones: you can select part of a picture with the selection tool and describe the change. For a designer, this is a quick way to gather references, a draft illustration or a background for a mockup. But it won't replace a finished interface or logo, and OpenAI says selections aren't always precise: edits may extend beyond the selected area. Also keep the rules in mind:

    • under OpenAI's terms you own the output to the extent the law allows, but someone else may get similar output;
    • by default OpenAI may use your chats to train models on the Free, Plus and Pro plans; you can switch this off in Settings → Data controls → "Improve the model for everyone";
    • Temporary Chat isn't saved to history and isn't used for training, which is handy for one-off questions;
    • don't upload client work under NDA, personal data or other people's work without permission.

    💡 In May 2025 the community ran an AI challenge: the landing page, logo, copy and visuals had to be made with AI, and participants shared their prompts. A task with a deadline like that quickly shows what ChatGPT does well and what you still finish by hand.

Practice with a deadline and live feedback

The best teacher is a task with a deadline that other people see. That's why the community regularly runs design games: the same brief for everyone, a deadline and a vote.

    NAOMA website redesign

    The academy's home page through the eyes of an applicant, a student and a teacher. Three finalists; the community chose the winner.

Questions and answers

Is the free version of ChatGPT enough?

For learning and most text tasks, yes. On the Free plan everyday text chats are available, while file uploads, image creation, voice and other tools have limits; ChatGPT tells you when you reach them. Paid plans raise those limits. Prices and models change often, so check ChatGPT's pricing page for current terms.

Can ChatGPT design for me?

It can give you copy drafts, ideas, a screen structure and reference images, but you decide what the user needs. Generated answers can be wrong and generic, so they need checking and finishing. More on AI in a designer's work in the guide [AI for designers](/en/guides/ai-for-designers).

How do I organize work on one project in ChatGPT?

Create a **project** (Projects): the chats and files for one task are kept together, so you don't have to explain the context again each time. Projects are available on the free plan too, but it allows only 5 files per project. Put the brief, interview notes and tone rules there, and every new chat in the project starts with that context.

How is ChatGPT different from Midjourney for a designer?

ChatGPT is a general assistant: copy, analysis, explanations, plus image creation and editing in the conversation. Midjourney is a specialized image generator with style parameters and references. Use ChatGPT for copy, briefs and research prep, and Midjourney for stylized visuals. How to work with it: [Midjourney for designers](/en/guides/midjourney-for-designers).

Is the Spaceberry community paid?

No. Spaceberry Community is a free Telegram community supported by Spaceberry Foundation, a non-profit organization. All you need to join is a Telegram account. Inside are 1,504 designers who discuss each other's work, plus regular design games: the same brief for everyone, a deadline and a community vote. Conversations are in Ukrainian.
